Indexing has grown remarkably since it was introduced in the early 1970s. The author of an updated Vanguard white paper explores both the theory behind indexing as an investment strategy and evidence to support its use in client portfolios. Ultimately, he concludes that indexing can be a viable strategy for a wide range of investors.
