Who is Mergent

Mergent, Inc., is one of the leading providers of business and financial data on U.S. and global publicly traded companies and securities. Mergent also offers the Dividend Achievers series of indexes, well-regarded benchmarks that track the performance of select groups of dividend-paying U.S. companies. Mergent subsidiaries provide services in independent equity research, index calculation and administration, and tools for portfolio building and measurement.

Beginning in 1970, Mergent (then Moody's) started tracking companies with histories of paying dividends for ten or more consecutive years. In 2004, Mergent used this data to start the Broad Dividend Achievers Index. More recently, Mergent created the Dividend Achievers Select Index exclusively for Vanguard. This index is similar to the broad index, with additional screening criteria used to ensure a stock's liquidity and investment viability.

Methodology

The Dividend Achievers Select Index is calculated using a modified market capitalization weighting methodology. It tracks the performance of dividend-paying companies that meet certain requirements. The Select Index is composed of stocks of generally high-quality companies with the potential for robust dividend growth.
